It’s Welcoming Week (September 10-19) and I’m Your Neighbor Books and Curious City welcome Acholi American musician and now picture book writer OD /Pasqual Bonny and his award-winning co-writer and I’m Your Neighbor Books co-founder Terry Farish for an online celebration and conversation.

With our favorite bookseller PRINT: A Bookstore, we will be celebrating A Feast for Joseph. The picture book draws the reader into the food and music of the Acholi, a community living in Uganda, Sudan, and worldwide—including our own neighborhoods.

In the book, Joseph and Mama have left the Kyangwali Refugee Camp in Uganda to settle in Maine. Joseph finds his new home a little too quiet and lonely without his beloved grandmother and the broader Acholi community. Where is the sweet noise of family and friends making and sharing a meal together? Where is the sound of someone playing the awal?

An idea to gather people starts in Joseph’s belly and his Dominican American friend Whoosh will, once again, be there to try something new. In a starred review, Kirkus Review called it a “wonderful book that humanizes refugees through a focus on joy in everyday life.”

A Feast for Joseph illustrated by Ken Daley is a companion book to Joseph’s Big Ride, a book featured in the I’m Your Neighbor Books sponsored Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival. Watch the festival’s animated read aloud:
